Story Time
Addiction is one of the aspects of my life that has at multiple points, consumed me in one way or another. I suffered from actual drug addiction, where I had to get help, but I didn’t get it the way I thought I would.
I got arrested in 2015 and at the time was sentenced to prison for 120 days or going through a ‘newer’ alternative sentencing program. So, I chose that, and started Drug Court. There, I realized how poor my coping skills had become.
I was essentially forced into sobriety and at the same time, had one of the hardest years of my life. Recovering from drug addiction by itself is hard, but add multiple deaths in the family (including my Father) and other personal issues that stemmed from my arrest… It was almost too much. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, as they say.
However, it was one of the single greatest moments of my life. I dug into self-help literature, and doubled down on my interest in psychology and how the environment shapes how we think. My drug court counselor, a recovered addict himself, is one of the best people I have met, and even officiated the wedding between my wife and I later in life.
I’m happy to say that it was time well spent, although it did not feel that way at the time. This is why I have learned to think of my days as either good days or growth days. Good days are obvious, but growth days are reframing bad days into the valuable lessons you get from them. Lessons about yourself, your job, others, the environment around you, and I could keep going…
But I won’t. All I will say is that this period in my life is a large part of why and where we are today. I’ve learned coping skills that will last me a lifetime, how to be flexible and know when to pivot (instead of push), and so much more during this time. It’s a moment that put me on the trajectory to be the person that I needed to become.
Your story could be the key that unlocks someone else’s prison.
